Our bungees are supplied by Performance Designs. Having tested bungees from a variety of different sources, we found that these outperformed other suppliers in providing consistent tension on lines, breaking force, and longevity.
If you are replacing bungees, we recommend following these guidelines:
- Aim for each stow to provide 8 - 12 lbs of tension (Source: PD) on the lines (i.e. you should be able to lift the canopy in the bag off the ground without the lines coming out).
- For most lines, large bungees double stowed (including mouth locks) will provide the most even tension, due to the complete wrap around the lines that is not created with a single stow.
- Bungees are designed to break at a certain force, should they need to, to release the lines. A good condition pilot chute will exert plenty of force to break bungees as required to prevent a bag lock. Keeping your pilot chute in good condition (replace it when necessary) is the safest way to prevent bag lock (not single stowing).
- Replace bungees before they break to maintain the correct tension (they’ll also be easier to remove!).
- Make sure the tension is symmetrical across the d-bag i.e. if you replace a bungee on one side, consider replacing its opposite, particularly if it’s a different brand / weight.
